Presiding the Case

Ray Castle, PhD, LAT, ATC, NREMT

A 1990 graduate of LSU, Castle has an extensive background in education, clinical practice, and professional service spanning over 32 years. Dr. Castle's clinical practice background has included experiences at the high school, college, and international (1996 Atlanta Olympic Games; USOC Sports Medicine Staff for 2003 Pan American Games; and 2004 US Women's Bobsled) levels, large-scale medical coverage and coordination, as well as extensive experience in emergency medicine. Castle is nationally known and recognized for his skills and contributions to advancing the athletic training profession and advocacy for sports health and safety through 200+ presentations, research projects, and publications.  He has served in various leadership roles in state, regional, and national organizations, as well as the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. After a 20-year stay at LSU where he was Professor and Athletic Training Program Director, Castle transitioned in August 2022 to devote his energy and passion to Action Medicine Consultants, LLC, as Owner and Chief Medical Officer since 2012. His company provides sports medicine event coordination; emergency medicine and response training; EAP development and audits for organizations; and continuing education courses. One of his most recent activities was serving as a consultant for the Louisiana High School Athletics Association in the development and implementation of its Pre-Game Administrative Conference (PAC), or “medical time-out” program. He currently serves as medical coordinator for over 40 large-scale events in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

Jason Cates, LAT, ATC

Jason Cates has been the director of athletic training at Cabot Public Schools in Cabot, Arkansas since July 2011. He has been very active in athletic health care for secondary schools at the state, district, and national levels since 1996. Jason has served on several committees on all three levels. He served as the President of the Arkansas Athletic Trainers’ Association. He has served on the NATA Secondary School Committee. He served on the Nation Federation of State High School Associations Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. He is the current chair of the Arkansas Activities Association Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. During his tenure on the AAA-SMAC Arkansas has adopted pre-season acclimatization and practice guidelines, wet bulb policies for hot weather, concussion policies for return to learn/play, AED/sudden cardiac policies, communicable disease policies, venue-specific emergency action plans, pre-game medical timeout policies, mandatory coaches education related to athletic healthcare issues, all in accordance with the Korey Stringer Institute. Jason has also been very active in many state legislative agendas dealing with secondary school athletic healthcare. Jason received his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training from Arkansas State University. Jason is married to Stacy and together they are the parents to Georgia, Genna, and Quinn.

Scott Arceneaux, LAT, ATC

Scott is an accomplished Secondary School Athletic Trainer who has dedicated his career to improving sports safety policies and practices in Louisiana. For over twenty years, Scott has been the Athletic Trainer at St. Amant High School, where he has made significant contributions to expanding the use of Athletic Trainers in the district, increasing their pay, and earning national recognition for the school as a Safe Sports School by the NATA four times. Scott has had extensive professional service, including service as to the Louisiana Athletic Trainers’ Association as past president, president-elect, and will serve as president from 2022-24.

Scott's passion for improving sports safety policies began in 1997 when he lobbied the Louisiana Athletic Trainer Association to establish a secondary school committee. This committee became the catalyst for the Safe Sports School Award and the ATLAS project, which have significantly improved sports safety in Louisiana. He also served as the Athletic Trainer coordinator for the LHSAA All-star games from 1996-2002 and was the Head Athletic Trainer for Team Louisiana football team in the Bayou bowl in 2011 and 2012.

He worked on legislation making it a requirement to have AEDs on all school campuses and was part of legislation that recognized best practices for serious sports injuries. In 2017, he was invited to help improve sports safety policy in Louisiana and became a part of TUFSS, a movement that led to the passing of the Remy Hidalgo Act in 2020. This act opened the door for the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to implement best practices for EAP's, WBGT, Cold water immersion, Heat acclimatization, and coaches' education, moving Louisiana from 42nd to 5th in sports policy.

Scott's leadership and advocacy for sports safety policies have been recognized by numerous organizations. He was an original member of the LHSAA first Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and was recognized by the LHSCA for his distinguished service in 2012. He is also the recipient of 2013 SEATA High School Athletic Trainer of the Year, NATA 2018 Athletic Trainer Service Award in 2018, Louisiana Athletic Trainers’ Association 2020 Hall of Fame, and the NATA in 2021 for 25 years of service.

Kari Wolf-Odland, DAT, LAT, ATC

Dr. Kari Wolf-Odland comes to the University of Minnesota and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery research staff with 25-plus years and a range of athletic training experience in the collegiate athletics and academic settings. After completing her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training at South Dakota State University, she pursued a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from Northern Michigan University. She completed her degree in 1997 and began working as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. In 2002, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to work as an assistant athletic trainer for Saint Joseph’s University where she worked with the women’s basketball team and had the privilege of working with the likes of Jameer Nelson.

In 2005, Kari began her academic career at Central Michigan University as a clinical faculty member in the CAATE undergraduate program in addition to providing coverage for the Sports Medicine department and the likes of future NFL Antonio Brown, Joe Staley, Eric Fisher, and MLB Josh Collmenter. After 1 year away from the profession she accepted a visiting clinical faculty position at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York in their CAATE undergraduate program and in 2012 returned to Minnesota to serve as a visiting clinical faculty member for the Winona State University CAATE undergraduate program. She began her doctoral study at the University of Idaho in 2014. After completing her doctoral work in May 2016, she accepted a clinical faculty position at the University of South Carolina teaching in both the CAATE undergraduate and post-professional AT programs. In 2018, she returned to Minnesota and began teaching in the CAATE professional Master's AT program at The College of St. Scholastica as well as adjuncting for the Physician Assistant and Occupational Therapy programs.

Dr. Wolf-Odland’s research interests include manual therapy (Mulligan Concept) for the treatment of mechanical neck pain, chronic low back pain, acute ankle sprains, and shoulder impingement. Additional research interests include adult spinal deformity pathologies (idiopathic scoliosis, thoracic kyphosis, degenerative disease, spondylolisthesis) and associated interventions. She has had her research published in international peer-reviewed journals in addition to being an invited speaker on Mulligan Concept at the state, regional and national levels. Kari began working at the University of Minnesota in September 2022. She enjoys spending time with her friends, attending sporting events and orchestra concerts, and a good shopping spree at TJ Maxx.

Christina Chapski, EdD, AT, ATC

Christina received her Bachelor of Science in Movement Science from the University of Michigan, her Master of Arts in Health Studies from the University of Alabama, and her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Central Michigan University.

Employed by Henry Ford Health since 2011, Christina is currently the Director of Athletic Training and Community Outreach for the Orthopaedic Service Line. She is currently the Medical Operations Director for the Rocket Mortgage Classic PGA Tour and Detroit Free Press Marathon and is a medical volunteer with US Figure Skating traveling internationally with Team USA. Previous assignments include working with collegiate athletes at the University of Michigan, University of Alabama, Saginaw Valley State University, and Central Michigan University; intramural and recreational athletes at Central Michigan University; and youth soccer athletes through the U.S. Olympic Development Program.

Prior to Henry Ford Health, Christina was a faculty member of Central Michigan University and Saginaw Valley State University. Christina was inducted into the Michigan Athletic Trainers’ Society Hall of Fame in 2021 and awarded the National Athletic Trainers AT Service Award in 2022.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

Each team will present evidence for or against the emergency management of a pediatric athlete with a suspected exertional heat stroke during this unique presentation. Structured similarly to a court case, each team will have opening statements, a presentation of evidence/witness, and closing arguments to support their stance on this topic.  Audience members will have an opportunity to actively participate in this presentation, as they will act as a jury to decide what team presented a better case for appropriate care of the suspected spin-injured athlete. 

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this live webinar program, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of an emergency action plan (EAP) in effectively managing exertional heat illnesses during athletic activities.
  2. Analyze the benefits of rapid cold-water immersion using a core rectal thermometer during exertional heat illnesses.
  3. Examine the perceived and actual legal, medical, and safety barriers faced by athletic trainers and other healthcare providers in utilizing core rectal thermometer use in pediatric patients.
  4. Compare the implications of immediate vs delayed rapid-body cooling methods on patient mortality vs. morbidity.
